There is a ton of misinformation out there on silicon dioxide which can make things confusing! Silicon dioxide is a natural compound found in many foods and even naturally inside the body.

There are two types, amorphous, which is what is generally found in food products and crystalline which is found in materials like quartz and sand.

Amorphous silicon dioxide, which is what we use, is well studied and classified as safe in foods.When ingested, amorphous silica is poorly absorbed by the gut and is typically excreted without significant metabolism or accumulation in the body.

Crystalline silicon dioxide, on the other hand, is what can pose some health risks but that is when it is inhaled. Furthermore, that concern primarily applies to industrial or occupational exposure (e.g. grind mortar, saw, drill concrete, or manufacture brick, concrete, stone, or ceramic) by breathing in dust, not oral ingestion.

So when people start talking about the dangers of silicon dioxide, they are most often mixing up the two and talk about the health risks of inhaling crystalline silicon dioxide, not ingesting amorphous silicon dioxide.

Silicon dioxide makes up less than 0.5% of a serving in the MSM Cellar Detox and it makes it significantly smoother and helps it dissolve in water. Without that, it is very crystalline and is difficult to dissolve which a lot of customers complained about plus it tastes way worse!

No, MSM does not contain sulfonamides, so it is generally safe for those with sulfa allergies. MSMis an organic sulfur compound, but it is not a sulfonamide. There is no known cross-reactivity between sulfonamide drugs and MSM. That being said, it is always good to start with a low dose and work up from there!

Many people with MTHFR variants take MSM without issue. However, because of potential differences in sulfur metabolism and detoxification, we always suggest people with MTHFR variants start with smaller doses and work their way up!

MSM contains sulfur which is involved in detoxification pathways in the liver. Because of this, some people with MTHFR (or other genetic variations) who have impaired detoxification or sulfur-processing pathways may find sulfur-containing supplements beneficial—or, in some cases, they may be more sensitive to them.

While MSM does contain a “methyl” component in its name (methylsulfonylmethane), its primary function in the body is not tied to the same folate- and B-vitamin–dependent methylation pathways as 5-MTHF or methylcobalamin (methylated B12).

No you don't! MSM supports detoxification by enhancing cellular function and promoting the body’s natural elimination pathways—like liver, kidneys, and lymph—not by forcefully mobilizing large amounts of toxins like some aggressive detoxes. That said, if someone is doing a more intense or targeted detox protocol, adding a binder could be helpful. But for daily cellular support and detox, most people do well with MSM on its own.
