Why We’re Called hi! (aka Human Improvement)
Before Human Improvement, the name for our company was HUSK. I loved it. It came from a conversation with a friend who is navigating a “bout with cancer” (apologies for the phrasing, how the heck do you talk about this disease in a non-pedantic way?). In reflection, he referred to the body as a husk. It was inspiring. It’s not a new, or novel, idea; but, in the context of our conversation — a man who was reflecting on a disease gnawing at his physical being — it had a profound effect. Our name is hi! it’s short for Human Improvement. We chose this name because it represents our view on wellness, nutrition, self care — and… well, everything. Our name represents an infinite process of progress. An acceptance that there is no penultimate state. We are always improving. There is no completion, there is only a commitment to move forward. Nowhere is this more important than our obligation to other humans, our neighbors. Especially those who are underrepresented, whose voices have been muted by oppression, passivity and humanity’s refusal to improve, to just accept that this is “how things are.”

Growing up as a competitive dancer, I never had to think about exercise because I was moving for three hours a day, minimum. It wasn’t until I quit dancing that I did a deep dive into the world of macro-counting, weight training, fit tea promoting gurus, and tried my best to keep up.
